Section 1.10.32 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum”, written by Cicero in 45 BC

1914 translation by H. Rackham

“But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?”

Section 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum”, written by Cicero in 45 BC

1914 translation by H. Rackham

“On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammelled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure is to be welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains.”

I nominate SRT Aviation for #1 All-America FBO. Two visits on Friday afternoon. The first was excellent quick-turn service. Vacuum pump failed during taxi out. Shawn helped me locate a pump, loaned the courtesy van so I could go and get it (73 miles each way), and printed directions. Shawn, Ken, Rich and John waited for my return past closing time to install the pump. They referred us to the Drury Inn with great SRT rate, and hangared the plane overnight. They only asked $75 for all that! Ken got us out and going Saturday morning. By the way, my observation as an A&P is that they have an excellent maintenance shop. Owners Shawn, Rich and Tom (SRT) are long-time professionals who love aviation.

We had to land to avoid some nasty weather, rather late in the evening. Airport manager, Chris, and his dad happen to be there to visit with us as we waited for our ride. Couldn’t do enough for us, great customer service!!!

Dr. Vaughn DeCoster

Overnighted on a Friday. Upon our return on Saturday we found a flat nose gear tire. Even though he had someplace to be Shawn stayed and helped us get the new tire and tube installed so we could be on our way. His service and help went way above and beyond the normal call of duty. Then Ken directed us to the complimentary slushy and popcorn machines! Definitely recommend this fine FBO.

Thanks to Shawn and the team at SRT Aviation for doing a thorough annual and upgrades on my 1977 Cardinal RG. His attention to detail was superb, and the Cardinal sparkled when I picked it up today. Shawn updated me every day via email on the inspection progress and any items that would need attention, and there were no surprises. Shawn was able to fit me in within a few days and completed the annual approximately 10 days after I dropped it off just prior to a weekend. The additional work described below followed the annual, but I still picked the Cardinal up only 19 days after dropping it off. In addition to the annual, his team did an IFR cert, replaced my ELT battery, checked the fire extinguisher, and replaced two main tires and tubes that I provided. Shawn also worked with me to replace my two fuel tank senders with the latest technology CiES senders and recalibrate the EDM-900. I’ll definitely use his services again!

Stopped at Mount Vernon, IL, for the first time today on an Angel Flight. What a nice airport! The gentleman at the FBO (Ken) provided fast and very friendly help with parking and fuel. There is a terminal building next to the FBO with a restaurant; they have a decent warm lunch buffet there for a quick bite to eat. And there’s a small but very nice military museum, free admission, with a nice older gentleman who very patiently explains the history of all the interesting exhibits.

I experienced a serious oil leak and landed at Mt. Vernon with no notice. The crew at SRT literally began working on my plane within minutes. The repairs took 4 hours and the work was top notch. Price was reasonable too. This is an excellent shop.

The wife and I stopped at MVN for the night due to some inclement weather. The folks at SRT were great. They got us a great deal at the new Drury Inn, the use of the courtesy car, and even parked my homebuilt in their hangar. Great experience. This will be my new stop going and coming from Oshkosh.

Ted Cyr

Nice airport. Well kept. Large and spacious. Was assisted in reserving a Hotel, Holiday Inn, and use of the courtesy van.

Bill Hoglan

We stopped at MVN yesterday for fuel and lunch because of reviews on AirNav. SRT Aviation and the restaurant in the terminal were exactly as described in the reviews. You will not find a friendlier FBO or airport. Great customer service. I will use this as my fuel stop between Georgia and the Dakotas from now on.
